About the Leather and Materials we work with | Leather Care Guide

At töhl, we produce and source the finest leather, made more beautiful by age and care. A range of specialized treatments and finishes, combined with laborious handcraft techniques, we ensure that our hand-picked leather is treated with artisanal respect, and that all processes meet global standards.

Soft Nappa

It is a full grain, durable aniline leather that retains a natural look and feel. With particularly soft tempering and low thickness, soft nappa leather exhibits a surface finish that has an elegant sheen, in smooth to refined textures.

Cosy Nappa

This is a light and supple leather that is exceptionally soft, has a smooth surface, and is of high-quality. Its signature suppleness is attained through a specialized tanning process, followed by a refined protective finish. Known for its luxurious and comfortable feel, the accessories made from this leather are flexible and pliable in nature.

Silky Nappa

Characterized by its smooth finish and subtle temper, silky nappa is a full-grain leather with an extra soft finish. It is supple to the touch and has a delicate buttery texture, making it the ultimate lightweight, breathable leather. The pearlized versions add a luster resembling the sheen of the mother of pearl.

Aged Nappa

This is a finishing treatment done to the leather to attain a classic vintage look, where its surface patterns bring out an aged or distressed feel. These nappa leathers incorporate a two-tone effect with a subtle sheen, featuring a rich textured optic.

Superfine Nappa

It is a burnished leather that has undergone a vegetable tanning process and is carefully polished or rubbed, often along its edges or surface to develop a darker, glossy finish. This technique brings out depth and contrast, giving the leather a rich, vintage, or worn-in appearance. Being vegetable-tanned, it is an eco-friendly material choice.

Metallic Nappa

Metallic nappa is an abrasion resistant and glossy leather, comfortable to the touch. Known for its modern, vibrant tones, lamination pigments or foils are used as surface coats on full-grain leather under high-temperatures. It has the luxurious feel of traditional nappa, retaining its natural grains, with high-end, reflective aesthetics.

Foil Leather

Foil leather is made by coating an ultra-thin, metallic film onto the top surface, reinforcing the leather. This process gives out a medium to high-gloss, reflective sheen, and is commonly made in silver, gold or copper. Some added features include florescent colors, specialized textural finishes and abrasion resistance properties, ideal for high-fashion products.

Soft Milled Leather

This leather is tumbled in a milling drum, where it is rotated in the absence of air and heat. As a result of the gentle falling action, the fine grains of the leather are naturally enhanced, improving its strength and durability. The finished products are supple and flexible with a fine texture.

Metallic Milled Leather

Metallic milled leather is soft, shimmery, and has a luminous surface finish achieved by a lamination process over the full-grain leather. It is distinctive for its classic colors, where accessories have a specialized, high-fashion appeal.

Pebble Grain Leather

This is a type of milled leather recognized by its distinct natural grain patterns. The process involves using extreme pressure and heat on the full-grain leather, to imprint the level of the desired lifted texture with stylish, irregular patterns. As a result, products made have a luxe, premium feel, with durable properties.

Suede

Suede is a soft, velvety material made from the underside of the leather, known for its smooth texture in a matte finish. It is lightweight and lends itself to making a rich color palette, while being a versatile and fashionable leather choice.

Split Suede

This is a type of suede leather that has its underside treated in a way to create a fine, velvety napped surface. Soft and silky, it adds interesting textures and accents to the product along its wear. This leather is characterized by its vibrant and bright colors.

Perforated leather

This is a premium leather processed using specialized machinery, where holes are punched in desired patterns and sizes. Finishing treatment of different kinds enhances durability. Therefore, the products exhibit both style and functionality, through its luxurious look and breathable nature.

Embossed Leather

A decorative grain or pattern applied to the surface of semi-finished leather under high pressure and heat, creates the embossed leather finish. This material is treated in different ways to give a distinct optic, similar to exotic animal textures.

Printed Leather

It is characterized by its wide versatility in terms of colors and customizable prints such as florals, exotic skins, artistic digital designs, etc. Unlike embossed leather, printed leather most often has a flat, uniform appearance across the surface, where prints are made to imitate the natural porosity of the leather used.

Other Materials we use:

Matty fabric

Matty fabric stands out for its raised, textured surface, which is achieved through weaving techniques. It is known for its durability and ability to withstand wear and tear. This material's water-resistant property blends seamlessly leather, ensuring the products last long.

Leather Care Guide

Use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe your bag clean every other day.

  • For stubborn marks or dirt, use a damp cloth and a suitable leather cleaner
  • Like our skin, leather accessories need to be moisturized occasionally. Use a soft, damp cloth to apply a small amount of leather conditioner or moisturizer to your bag, gently wiping it along the grain to rehydrate the leather
  • Leather needs to breathe. When you’re not using your töhl product, keep it in its original cloth bag in a well ventilated room. They are not to be stored inside plastic or other nonporous materials
  • Keep your bag stuffed with the butter paper it came with, or bag fillers, to help preserve its shape
  • Don’t overfill your bag, clutch or wallet. Leather has the ability to stretch and mould to fit, but once it expands, it will never go back to its original shape
  • Allow a wet product to dry slowly and naturally in a well-ventilated space. Do not use a hair dryer on your leather product, or place it near a heater to dry it, as this changes the chemical structure of the leather and leaves it stiff and creased
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and heat
